As a constituent, I urge you to oppose the nomination of Avril Haines for Director of National Intelligence.

Haines censored the vast majority of the Senate's report on torture, and overruled the CIA's own Inspector General to refuse to discipline CIA agents who had hacked into the computers of the Senate Intelligence Committee to sabotage an investigation of torture. Haines chose instead to award medals to those agents. She supported Gina Haspel for CIA Director, despite Haspel's torture record.

Haines approved particular drone "strikes" and was instrumental in developing a legalistic defense for the practice of blowing people up with missiles from drones. She co-authored the May 22, 2013, "presidential policy guidance" on the subject. Numerous former top officials have denounced drone killings as counter-productive on their own terms. Numerous experts view them as illegal, immoral, and dangerous.

Restricting civil liberties, increasing surveillance, and boosting militarism are not what's needed at this point in time. We need to avoid that mistake and support nominees who insist on the rule of law, prevention of unnecessary violence, and enforcement of existing laws.
