State Only Petition (SalsaStaff 249335)

On August 23-25, hundreds of members of the Democratic National Committee will meet in Chicago and vote on a momentous reform that could decide the fate of our country. California’s DNC delegation, the largest in the nation, will have a major effect on the decision -- whether to limit the influence of “superdelegates” in the presidential nominating process. It’s a decision that could have a huge impact on the Democratic Party’s capacity to oust the extremist Republican Party from power.
During the 2016 election campaign, more than half of the superdelegates (party officials and Democrats in Congress or state offices) committed themselves to Hillary Clinton nearly three months before a single voter had cast a ballot in a primary or caucus – thus sending a message that party elites had already put their thumbs on the scales.

Looking ahead, the DNC’s Rules and Bylaws Committee has put forward a proposal to effectively eliminate the voting power of superdelegates for the first ballot at the national convention. If the reform proposal passes, superdelegates will not cast a vote on the first ballot at the 2020 Democratic National Convention – unless one of the candidates has already secured enough pledged delegates in primaries and caucuses to win the nomination outright.

Petition text:

To: California’s members of the Democratic National Committee

We, California voters, urge all 32 members of our state’s DNC delegation to unite behind passage of much-needed superdelegate reform. This reform – backed by the California Democratic Party, DNC Chair Tom Perez and Vice Chair Keith Ellison – is vital for helping the party to emerge unified, strong and victorious in the 2018 midterms and 2020 presidential campaign. Please vote for the superdelegate reform proposal from the Rules and Bylaws Committee.
