Democratic leaders say they’re committed to supporting abortion rights. So why did Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and Majority Whip Jim Clyburn go all out to support the only anti-choice Democrat in the House?

The trio’s blitz made the difference in the recent Democratic primary in South Texas, when Rep. Henry Cuellar won by only 289 votes (out of 45,513) against a young, pro-choice progressive challenger, Jessica Cisneros.

After the Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe was announced on Friday, Pelosi declared: "If we don't do everything in our power to change the course of history in this critical window of time, we could doom generations of women to unbearable suffering, danger and heartache at the decimation of their reproductive rights.”

We agree. But Pelosi, Hoyer and Clyburn did everything in their power to keep an anti-choice congressman in office.

Tell those three anti-choice enablers to apologize and resign from their leadership posts.

The unprincipled and ineffectual Democratic House leadership should step aside to make room for principled progressives. That would help mobilize young people, women and activists of color into winning coalitions that can defend and expand not only reproductive rights, but also economic justice, climate justice and voting rights.

Tell Pelosi, Hoyer and Clyburn that it's time to make way for a new class of leaders who are prepared to lead the party toward a progressive future.

Most of the public is on our side on these issues. Yet Republicans keep winning . . . while today's Democratic leaders pay closer attention to corporate donors than to progressive activists and marginalized constituencies.

We need progressive leaders who are willing to fight for our rights -- and refuse to support politicians who want to take them away.
