The trend toward less vicious prosecutors in the United States is in peril.

The most prominent of many district attorneys recently elected on platforms of serious reform -- Larry Krasner (Philadelphia DA since January 2019) -- is up against
  • TV ads from a right-wing police-backed PAC,
  • thousands of Republicans switching to the Democratic Party to vote against Krasner in the May 18th primary,
  • false accusations of responsibility for a rising murder rate that is part of a national trend, and
  • a Democratic challenger backed by the local chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police (whose national union endorsed former President Donald Trump).
Already the national media is accepting the spin that if Krasner loses, it would mean that efforts to seriously challenge systems of policing and mass-incarceration are dead.

San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin and Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón are facing recall efforts that could move things further away from humane policy reforms.

Let's solve this problem and advance the reform agenda by chipping in now to fund Krasner's campaign and RootsAction's work. Click here.

Krasner has gone a long way in the right direction, and trends are actually in his favor, with the recent reelection of Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx in Illinois and Baltimore State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby.

The star of a new documentary on PBS called "Philly DA," Krasner came in and cleaned house with mass firings. He unearthed a file called "Damaged Goods" on corrupt police.

Larry Krasner's office has exonerated 18 innocent people in three years.

He's reduced the county jail population by 40% to its lowest level since 1985, and reduced the years people spend under probation or parole by 57%.

He's expanded juvenile diversion programs to felony cases, and has implemented a restorative justice program for children that allows the child and victim to heal without the use of incarceration.

Krasner has developed a database of police misconduct and is prosecuting police officers for abusing their power, including a Chief Inspector for sexual abuse against women officers, two on-duty officers for the killings of men who were unarmed when they were shot, and police officers who have assaulted peaceful protesters.

He's stopped providing information to ICE, stopped seeking the death penalty, stopped prosecuting simple drug possession, diverted drug cases to treatment, sued Big Pharma over the opioid epidemic, and expanded services to crime victims.

Contrary to fact-free, right-wing accusations, Krasner has actually achieved a higher rate of convictions in shooting and homicide cases than had been seen in years.

And of course, Krasner is not making the left happy, as he continues prosecuting the questionable conviction of journalist and former Black Panther Mumia Abu-Jamal.

If we want reform of the U.S. criminal justice system to expand or accelerate, we do not want Larry Krasner to be defeated.

This is urgent.

The primary is weeks away.
