For three decades, Rahm Emanuel has been one of the Democratic Party’s most arrogant and anti-social-justice power brokers. Now, news outlets are reporting that President Biden is likely to name him to a top diplomatic post -- probably U.S. ambassador to Japan or China.

In a word: No!

Because of his record, the prospect of “Ambassador Rahm Emanuel” is dire.

“Naming Emanuel to such a post would be an affront to many of the constituencies that got Biden elected,” RootsAction co-founders Jeff Cohen and Norman Solomon wrote in an article published today. “The saga of Emanuel’s three decades in politics is an epic tale of methodical contempt for progressive values.”

Working in Bill Clinton’s White House, Emanuel fought for the NAFTA trade deal, the mass incarceration-oriented 1994 crime bill, harsh barriers to immigration and the punitive 1996 “welfare reform” law. Later, as a member of Congress, Emanuel supported the Iraq invasion and defended the U.S. occupation of that country.

While serving as President Obama’s chief of staff in 2009 and 2010, Emanuel argued to weaken Obamacare and used abusive language in denouncing progressive Democrats.

After being elected mayor of Chicago in 2011, Emanuel waged an intensive war on the teachers’ union and made history by closing 49 public schools, many in black neighborhoods.

In a tough re-election campaign in 2015, Emanuel very likely would have lost the election except for the fact that for 13 months his administration suppressed a horrific dashcam video showing the death of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald, an African American who’d been shot 16 times by a police officer as he walked away from the officer.

When it was reported last November that Biden was considering him for a cabinet post, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted: “Rahm Emanuel helped cover up the murder of Laquan McDonald. Covering up a murder is disqualifying for public leadership.”

If Emanuel becomes the U.S. ambassador to China or Japan -- countries with the world’s second- and third-largest economies -- he will gain new leverage in a region bristling with ethnic and military tensions. As Jeff and Norman put it in their article, “Everything about his record indicates that such power would be vested in the wrong hands.”

Please take a minute now to tell President Biden and both your senators that “Ambassador Rahm Emanuel” is a terrible idea.
