“If I didn’t have a primary, I wouldn’t care.” These were the words New York Congressman Eliot Engel used last week as he demanded speaking time at a press conference on the murder of George Floyd. These were the words he used when he thought no one was listening, when he assumed his mic was turned off. It wasn’t. The world heard him loud and clear. He’s worried about his progressive primary challenger.

The challenger that Engel is so worried about is JAMAAL BOWMAN, a renowned educator in the Bronx. But he cannot defeat Engel without last-minute national support. Please help him.

Eliot Engel is another tired, establishment Democrat unwilling or unable to understand the gravity of the moment, more focused on his own political fortunes than on the systemic injustices ravaging our communities. Maybe this explains why Rep. Engel has spent hardly any time in his district since March, even as NY-16 was one of the districts hardest-hit by COVID anywhere in the country. Rep. Engel is out of touch, ineffective, and has abdicated his leadership in a moment of crisis.

RootsAction is proud to support Jamaal Bowman, a true progressive Democrat for NY-16. On June 23—in just over two weeks—Jamaal has the opportunity to defeat one of the most vulnerable and most militaristic Democrats in the House.

Help him get across the finish line—support Jamaal Bowman today!

While Rep. Engel has been hiding away in his suburban home in Maryland over the past few months, Jamaal Bowman has been on the ground in his district delivering food and medical supplies. While Rep. Engel has spent the last three decades in Washington voting to deregulate Wall Street, enlarge the bloated Pentagon budget, and expand the prison industrial complex, Jamaal Bowman has been in the Bronx, fighting on behalf of working families and against the school-to-prison pipeline as the visionary principal of a public middle school. While Rep. Engel has raised almost all of his campaign funds from corporate lobbyists and PACs, Jamaal is funded entirely by small dollar donations from ordinary people.

The choice is clear: NY-16 deserves a representative accountable to the community, not the corporations. NY-16 deserves Jamaal Bowman.

Click here to help Jamaal Bowman win on June 23!

We wouldn’t be sending this email out nationwide if we didn’t think this was one of the most important—and winnable—Congressional races in the county. Jamaal’s campaign has a ton of momentum, and we’re in the home stretch. Let’s replace a corporate centrist with a visionary progressive. Let’s win this.
