RootsAction: Connect. Act. Grow.
RootsAction and our allies and friends in California think we can get the state of California to take a stand for a federal budget that moves away from endless wars and toward endless peace. We're asking California state legislators and the Governor to pass a resolution similar to one already passed by California cities.

It begins like this:

Whereas the U.S. Congress and President Trump have dramatically increased military spending in recent years, depriving us of those funds for human and environmental spending at home and abroad, and bringing military spending to well over 60% of federal discretionary spending,

Whereas environmental and human needs are desperate and urgent,

Whereas fractions of the U.S. military budget could provide free, top-quality education from pre-school through college, end hunger and starvation, convert the U.S. to clean energy, provide clean drinking water everywhere it’s needed on the planet, build fast trains between all major U.S. cities, and double non-military U.S. foreign aid rather than cutting it,

Whereas 3 percent of U.S. military spending could end starvation on earth,

Whereas a fraction of military spending could prepare the United States to better handle disease pandemics . . . .

Dear California Legislators and Governor Newsom,

As your constituent, I urge you to pass the California Peace Budget Resolution found at https://bit.ly/capeace

It is almost identical to resolutions already passed by cities in California and by the U.S. Conference of Mayors. The Resolution, in line with popular opinion polling, urges the U.S. Congress to move funding from militarism to human and environmental needs.

The present Covid 19 pandemic puts in stark view the underlying weaknesses in maintaining the health, economic, and environmental  security of the United States (and other countries). It is apparent that we need a more sustainable  infrastructure. The Peace Budget Resolution provides a compelling rationale for redirecting some of the many billions now dedicated to war.

Please carefully read and consider approving the well-documented Peace Budget Resolution. We also ask that Governor Newsom present the resolution to the Governors’ Association for approval.

Endorsement by the California  Governor and legislative bodies can set an example for other states to examine our nationwide deteriorated infrastructure and put us on a path to more uplifting and healthy relations in the U.S. and around the world.
