|Sign and Send a Petition to Close Loopholes for Secret Money in Politics.
California took a major step toward stopping secret money in politics by passing the California DISCLOSE Act which requires ballot measure ads and Super PAC ads on TV, radio, print, and online to clearly and prominently show their top funders.
It's working, but there remain two major ways for secret money to buy elections: 1) mass text messages that don’t say who paid for them, and 2) paid petition signature gathering efforts to get an initiative on the ballot that also hide who’s behind them.
Two new California bills would close these loopholes: 1) AB 201 (Cervantes-Mullin) the Text Message DISCLOSE Act to require text message ads to disclose who paid for them, and 2) SB 47 (Allen) the Petition DISCLOSE Act to require initiative petition circulators to show voters who’s paying for the signature gathering.
SIGN the Petition NOW! Ask YOUR legislators to vote "YES" on the Text Message DISCLOSE Act and Petition DISCLOSE Act. Their final votes are this week!
In 2018 hundreds of millions of political text messages flooded voters nationwide — and in 2016 and 2018 the 29 initiatives on the California ballot each spent at least $1 million just to get there — but in both cases, voters couldn't identify the secret Big Money behind the efforts.
AB 201, the Text Message DISCLOSE Act, requires text messages paid for by candidates to "stand by their ad" by listing their name and the office they’re running for. Texts from other committees must include the committee name or a URL to a disclosure website. Most importantly, when paid workers text about a ballot measure (or as an independent expenditure about a candidate), the texts must list their top funder like almost all other political ads in California!
SB 47, the Petition DISCLOSE Act, requires signature gatherers for an initiative to show you their top three big funders before you sign to put it on the ballot! They'll have to list the funders on either the petition itself or on an "Official Top Funders" sheet they show you before you sign.
AB 201 and SB 47 must pass their final floor votes to reach the Governor — but they face powerful opposition, so we must show legislators how many people demand they vote "YES".
