House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has told the Washington Post that she is opposed to impeaching Trump because doing so would be "divisive," and because the United States is "great" and not in any "perilous state," but would be if Trump had a second term.
We refuse to accept this claim and see no evidence that two more years of Trump, and the precedents established by tolerating his abuses, would do no harm, while any additional years beyond those would threaten us all.

Whoever does the math that finds four years of Trump to be tolerable and eight years intolerable would have agreed with then-Congressman Rahm Emanuel in January 2007. The Democrats had just won the majority in the House. Public support for impeachment of President George W. Bush was high, and exit polls found voters' top motivation to be ending the war on Iraq. Emanuel told the Washington Post that Democrats would keep the war going in order to campaign against it again two years later.
Apart from the immorality and unrepresentative nature of discarding governing in favor of endless war and endless election campaigning, the public seems less and less to fall for it.
If we are to turn the conversation in Washington away from misguided electoral calculations and toward actual governance and protection of the Constitution, including the responsibility to impeach Donald Trump, we need your help. Please donate what you can here.

Pelosi's position is not new, and it is high time we stood up to it. When 58 of 193 House Democrats voted last year to move ahead with a process to impeach Donald Trump, then Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer released a statement refusing to support impeachment proceedings:
"This President has made statements and taken actions that are beyond the pale for most Americans, embracing those who espouse hatred and division while promoting policies that would harm our economy and undermine our national security," Pelosi and Hoyer noted. "Legitimate questions have been raised about his fitness to lead this nation."
Yet the top two Democrats concluded: "Now is not the time to consider articles of impeachment."

Those offenses include violation of the Constitution on domestic and foreign emoluments, incitement of violence, interference with voting rights, discrimination based on religion, illegal wars, illegal threats of nuclear war, abuse of the pardon power, obstruction of justice, politicization of prosecutions, and collusion against the United States with Russia and Egypt on behalf of Israel.1
Some important history: The impeachment of George W. Bush had majority public support (Newsweek, Oct. 24, 2006), but then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi effectively forbade her Democratic colleagues to pursue, declaring it "off the table." She even persuaded the then-House Judiciary Committee chair to agree to hold hearings on various impeachable offenses but to announce at the start of the hearings that nothing would move forward no matter what was revealed.
