Impeachment of President Trump is a goal that RootsAction has actively pursued since the day he was inaugurated, and we will continue to pursue it.

The importance of impeaching Trump makes it all the more vital to impeach him for the right reasons. And that’s why there was something so disturbing -- and dangerous -- about a mass email that you may have seen last week from an impeachment project.

That email started out by approvingly quoting a statement by former CIA head John Brennan that “Trump’s press conference performance in Helsinki” exceeded the constitutional threshold for impeachment and “was nothing short of treasonous.”

Brennan is an odd authority to cite about constitutionality, given that he directly oversaw a methodical policy of extrajudicial killings with drones -- and was on TV a few months ago forcefully urging the Senate to confirm the torture-supervising CIA official Gina Haspel to become director of that agency.

But the email from the impeachment project got worse. “We agree with former CIA Director John Brennan that standing with a foreign entity over his own country qualifies as ‘high crimes & misdemeanors,’” it said -- echoing a media outcry against doubting the conclusions of U.S. intelligence agencies.

Let’s remember: In the leadup to the Iraq war in 2003, Americans who spoke out against the impending invasion of that country were similarly denounced for daring to question the “slam dunk” conclusions from U.S. intelligence agencies -- that the Iraqi regime of Saddam Hussein definitely had weapons of mass destruction.

If only more of us had stood with “foreign entities” who challenged that claim, the lives of a lot of people who died in Iraq could have been saved.

We’re very troubled when “free speech” advocates recklessly promote messaging that chills dissent while deploying such epithets as “treasonous.”

For analysis of just how dangerous such rhetoric is, check out the background links at the bottom of this email. Articles from The Atlantic magazine, the Common Dreams website and the media watch group FAIR illuminate some key pitfalls.

Meanwhile, it’s crucial to keep pushing for impeachment. As we approach the 1-year anniversary of the fascist rally in Charlottesville, we must demand Trump's impeachment and removal for his ongoing incitement of racist violence.

It's also critical that we tell House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi to stop trying to prevent impeachment.

Since day one, Trump has violated the domestic and foreign emoluments clauses of the Constitution. More recent impeachable offenses have included obstruction of justice, incitement of violence, interference with voting rights, discrimination based on religion, illegally threatening nuclear war, and abuse of pardon power.
