When 58 of 193 House Democrats (and 0 Republicans) recently voted to move ahead with a process to impeach Donald Trump, the Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer released a statement refusing to support impeachment proceedings:
"This President has made statements and taken actions that are beyond the pale for most Americans, embracing those who espouse hatred and division while promoting policies that would harm our economy and undermine our national security," Pelosi and Hoyer noted. "Legitimate questions have been raised about his fitness to lead this nation."
Yet those top Democrats concluded: "Now is not the time to consider articles of impeachment."
Click here to tell Nancy Pelosi that now is the time -- to immediately move forward on numerous documented and indisputable impeachable offenses.
Those offenses include violation of the Constitution on domestic and foreign emoluments, incitement of violence, interference with voting rights, discrimination based on religion, illegal wars, illegal threats of nuclear war, abuse of the pardon power, obstruction of justice, politicization of prosecutions, and collusion against the United States with Russia and Egypt on behalf of Israel. See the first background link below for draft articles of impeachment on each of these topics.
Click here to tell Nancy Pelosi not to limit impeachment to the topic of an investigation by a special counsel and then to use that investigation as a rationale for stalling.
Pelosi has previously said that impeaching Trump would be a waste of time because "he's just not that important." She has claimed that impeaching Trump would "divide us, not bring us together."
She's also claimed that if we just wait, Trump will "self-impeach." And she's compared impeaching Trump to the impeachment of President Bill Clinton, which she says "was a frivolous activity."
A more apt comparison might be the impeachment of George W. Bush, which had majority public support (Newsweek, Oct. 24, 2006), but which then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi effectively forbade her Democratic colleagues to pursue, declaring it "off the table." She even persuaded then-House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers to agree to hold hearings on various impeachable offenses but to announce at the start of the hearings that nothing would move forward no matter what was revealed.
