ATTENTION: Water Contaminated With Lead and Copper Discovered at the Eastham Unit Prison in Lovelady, Texas
The water at the Texas Eastham Unit has been confirmed to contain high levels of copper and lead. Investigators have discovered that the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has posted warning notices throughout the prison to alert consumers of the presence of contaminants in the water system.
Activist Keith “Malik” Washington, a prisoner at the Eastham Unit, has reported that the water at Eastham has “a strong sulfur-like smell and a very bad offensive taste which leaves behind a gritty residue in your mouth.” Washington also says that prison guards have confirmed that the water is contaminated and that they themselves do not drink it. The prison administrators at the Eastham Unit have provided an alternative water source for their prison guards, yet continue to force their prisoners to drink water contaminated with lead and copper.
Sign this petition to the U.S. Department of Justice to request an immediate investigation into what appears to be gross negligence and deliberate indifference on the part of Eastham Unit prison administration. This petition also calls for the Centers for Disease Control to test and investigate the water supply at the Eastham Unit.
After signing the petition, please use the tools on the next webpage to email and phone those who need to hear from us, and to share the petition with your friends.
