Education should be a human right. In the United States, students now graduate so deeply in debt with student loans that they often never get out. The debt limits their options and burdens their lives.
Over 700,000 Americans have grown old and now rely on Social Security but are still trying to pay off their student loans. In over 160,000 such cases, the U.S. government is taking money out of their Social Security checks to pay their student debt.
Social Security is supposed to be secure, guaranteed. Reducing Social Security checks to pay debts was illegal until 1996. It doesn't have to continue.
Click here to tell the Department of Education to declare a moratorium on garnishing Social Security benefits for student debt.
