RootsAction rarely focuses on election campaigns. Frankly, across the country, very few candidates for Congress have inspired us to make an exception.
Carl Sciortino is such a candidate. He’s running in the special election set for Tuesday, October 15, to fill the congressional seat left vacant by Ed Markey.
Progressives everywhere have a big stake in this election.
Reflecting his longtime clarity on U.S. foreign policy, this summer Carl spoke out against the planned U.S. attack on Syria. He has unequivocally opposed the NSA’s pernicious violations of civil liberties.

Your support for Carl could make the difference -- in what looks like a close race.
You can click here to read what Carl has to say about progressive values. In his words, progressives “put people's needs over the wants of big corporations.”
The winner of this Democratic primary on October 15 is virtually certain to go on to Congress. If that winner is Carl Sciortino, the results won’t only benefit you and others who live in the Fifth Congressional District of Massachusetts. People around the country will benefit.
You can really help -- by voting for Carl, forwarding this email to others who live in the Fifth District, sharing information from the Carl Sciortino for Congress website, volunteering, and donating to his campaign as it goes down to the wire.
With corporate power choking democracy, we need to fight back.
“As a co-founder of the Progressive Caucus in our state legislature, I have a proven record of taking on these fights,” Carl says. “I have stood up to my own party leadership for economic justice -- not only sponsoring and passing a bill to raise the minimum wage, but also one closing corporate tax loopholes.”
Advocates for alternatives to war would have a real ally in Congressman Sciortino. As Dennis Kucinich recently said, “When other candidates remained silent or equivocated as the U.S. was at the edge of war against Syria, Carl Sciortino fearlessly declared his opposition to an attack.”
Like many other progressives around the country, I’m hoping for good news on election night -- and will appreciate whatever you can do to help elect Carl Sciortino to Congress.
