Today the U.S. Senate is holding its first-ever hearing on amending the Constitution to reverse the Citizens United decision and get the big money out of politics.
It's the perfect time to send a message to your Senators, urging them to support two important amendment bills.
Corporations have been given constitutional rights meant for people, allowing them to strike down laws on health care, environmental protection, consumer rights, and civil rights, as well as election spending. The People's Rights Amendment introduced by Congressman Jim McGovern will make it clear that corporations don't have the same rights as people.
The Supreme Court has declared money a form of "free speech," allowing those with the most money to drown out the voices of everyone else. S.J. Res. 29, introduced by Senator Tom Udall, will restore Congress' and states' authority to limit money in politics.
Urge your senators to back these two proposed amendments to the Constitution, to overrule two disastrous doctrines invented by the Supreme Court.
These are steps in a long campaign to clean the money out of elections. We'll only get there if we raise our voices now.
