2011 was terrific first year for RootsAction, and we couldn’t have done it without you. So, thank you!
When we launched last year, we knew we wanted to mobilize on the big issues – against war and corporate power, and in defense of the social safety net and the Bill of Rights.
We received early support from independent-minded progressives like Naomi Klein, Glenn Greenwald, Cornel West, Jim Hightower, Barbara Ehrenreich, Daniel Ellsberg, Bill Fletcher Jr., Laura Flanders, former U.S. Senator James Abourezk and Coleen Rowley.
But what showed us we were onto something is the amazing popular support we received. Less than a year ago, we had exactly zero people on our list. Now, we are more than 100,000 strong and growing every day.
With your active support, we called on a Spanish judge to use international law to prosecute Bush era officials for authorizing torture. We called for a tax on Wall Street speculators and told President Obama to quit pushing nuclear power in the wake of Japan’s disaster. We took every opportunity we could find to call on Congress to drastically reduce military spending and we promoted Senator Merkley’s successful amendment to the “Defense” Authorization Act calling on the President to expedite troop withdrawal from Afghanistan.
RootsAction was one of the first groups to support the Occupy movement, with an on-the-ground presence in New York, Washington, D.C. and Oakland. Tens of thousands of you spoke out in defense of the Occupy protesters’ First Amendment rights to assemble and protest.
You signed our action alerts. You forwarded alerts. You shared actions on Facebook. You tweeted about us. And each time you acted, we grew stronger!
So thank you again.
We ask just one thing in this email: Will you invite your friends to join RootsAction today? If you recieved this email from a friend, you can join RootsAction here.
Here’s to an even more productive 2012.
