"We've taken on corporations that put profit over people. A campaign system fueled by corporate cash. A justice system that doesn’t recognize our humanity. A president who wants to send us back."
—Rep. Ilhan Omar
Congresswoman Ilhan Omar is standing for the progressive change we need against vicious slander and piles of campaign money.
As penalty for supporting decent healthcare, education, and environmental policies, and for such outrages as proposing that the United States not arm governments that abuse human rights, Congresswoman Omar has been falsely accused of wanting to get rid of the entire U.S. economy and government and falsely denounced as an anti-semite.
And the money just keeps pouring into Omar's primary opponent in a bipartisan effort to uphold the catastrophic status quo. Rich, establishment, pro-Trump, and Israel-right-or-wrong funders from across the United States are maxing out on payments to Ilhan's challenger.

Omar's highest-profile primary challenger, a previously little-known attorney, raised an unprecedented $3.2 million in the last fundraising quarter. Much of that, as Buzzfeed reported last week, came from donors outside the state who maxed out at the chance to retire Omar by giving $2,800 each.
But we need Ilhan Omar in Congress. She's leading the way on all variety of issues, foreign and domestic. Read this excerpt of her op-ed in the Washington Post responding to the latest slanders:
“Fear of the ‘other’ — whether it is someone of a different country of origin, a different race or a different religion — stems, I believe, from the myth of scarcity. This mentality pits minority groups against one another in a fight for scraps, and those who benefit from the status quo are happy to see us distracted and bickering. . .
"We need to jettison the zero-sum idea that one person’s gain is another’s loss. I want your gain to be my gain; your loss to be mine, too. When a refugee is able to flee oppression and come to America — that benefits all of us. And when we lose a member of our community to the virus or to health-care costs that are out of reach, we all fail."

The policies that Omar has advanced and helped to enact reflect that humanitarian world view. They challenge U.S. exceptionalism — not out of cruelty, but out of caring combined with courage.
RootsAction activists can't "max out" like her opponent's wealthy backers who are each donating $2,800, but if a lot of us donate a little -- perhaps even $28 -- we can help level the playing field.
