Stopping COVID-19 requires international cooperation and solidarity, not domination and military threats. It is time to end the sanctions against Venezuela and cease trying to overthrow its government.
It is not up to the U.S. government to decide how Venezuela should be governed. As flawed as all governments are, the record of U.S. efforts supposedly aimed at improving foreign governments is a centuries-long horror show of virtually unmitigated disaster and blowback.
U.S.-backed sanctions have severely harmed the Venezuelan people, causing tens of thousands of deaths (40,000 as of last year according to a study by the Center for Economic and Policy Research).
The elected government of Venezuela seeks supplies, including medicine and food as well as fuel, that are vital to fighting the pandemic.
The efforts organized or supported by the U.S. government to overthrow Venezuela's elected government have failed because most Venezuelans do not accept such challenges to their sovereignty. The vast majority of them oppose a U.S. war or coup and the current sanctions -- despite all the talk in Washington of taking action against Venezuela in the name of "democracy."
Click here to ask your Representative and Senators to support legislation blocking war and ending sanctions on Venezuela.
Here is the message that you'll be sending:
As your constituent, I urge you to fully support H.R.1004 / S.J.Res. 11 to block unauthorized U.S. military action in Venezuela.
President Trump has been threatening military intervention in Venezuela.
Invading Venezuela would not alleviate human suffering and would only add to the United States’ history of ruinous military interventions and risk spiraling into a costly and devastating war.
I also urge you, urgently, to end the barbaric sanctions that are harming and killing the people of Venezuela. This sort of collective punishment and violation of national sovereignty is illegal as well as immoral.
In addition, it is Congress's responsibility to immediately investigate and hold accountable those in the U.S. government who have been supporting violent coup attempts in Venezuela for years now.
