Donald Trump is the most deceitful president in modern history. Trump and his lying need to be driven from office – the sooner, the better.
Unfortunately, the current frontrunner for the Democratic nomination to challenge Trump in 2020, Joe Biden, has his own problem with the truth. And that problem seems to be worsening.
In an NPR interview days ago, Biden went on at length about his role in the disastrous invasion of Iraq, and he offered Trump-like distortions. Biden claimed that he “came out against the war” at “the moment it started.” He didn’t. As the record clearly shows, he repeatedly endorsed President Bush’s war and defended his pro-war Senate vote for many months after. And for years, Biden kept voting to fund the war.
He claimed to NPR that he was convinced to vote to authorize the war by a private commitment from Bush that “he was not going to go to war in Iraq” and that Bush “needed the vote to be able to get inspectors into Iraq.” That claim is dubious – but, if true, reflects a dangerous gullibility on Biden’s part.
Even mainstream pundits who support Biden are questioning his comments and his capacity to challenge Trump.
RootsAction has long believed – based on Biden’s record and his lack of honesty about that record – that Biden would be one of the weaker Democratic candidates against Trump in a general election.

Team Trump is well aware of the weaknesses in Biden’s record – and ready to inform every voter in key swing states that Biden supported NAFTA, and that he repeatedly sided with banks against consumers on bankruptcy protection and student loans.
Please support RootsAction’s “Biden Fact Squad” to get the truth to Democratic voters months before the Democratic primaries or caucuses even start.
And please share our Biden Fact Squad flyer that we’ve distributed to thousands of progressive activists and voters. Your donation helps us print more of these two-sided, full-color flyers.
Here’s the sad reality: “It is difficult to over-estimate the critical role Biden played in making the tragedy of the Iraq war possible.... In his powerful position as chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, he orchestrated a propaganda show [in summer 2002] designed to sell the war to skeptical colleagues and the America public by ensuring that dissenting voices would not get a fair hearing.”
Those are the words of Middle East Studies Professor Stephen Zunes, as printed in the RootsAction flyer that we are placing in the hands of Democrats across the country.
The last thing progressives need in our effort to defeat a sitting president who fraudulently pretends he opposed the Iraq invasion is a Democratic candidate like Biden who pretends he opposed the war “the moment it started.”
Please support our work.
