Ilhan Omar is demonstrating how a member of Congress who actually tries to change things can succeed. For example, on Thursday the House passed her amendment requiring that the U.S. military provide Congress the cost and the supposed national security benefits of all foreign bases and operations.

And what is the thanks she gets?

Donald Trump tweets that Ilhan Omar should go back to Somalia. And Fox News host Tucker Carlson has joined a chorus of xenophobes denouncing Congresswoman Omar as a threat to the United States. Carlson recently called her "living proof that the way we practice immigration has become dangerous to this country."

If you disagree with Trump and Carlson, click here and contribute to Rep. Omar's re-election campaign.

In making their Omar attacks, Trump and Carlson and others like them not only demonize whole categories of people, but stigmatize the very idea of trying to improve the United States in any way. Criticism of the United States, Carlson maintains, is the hateful product of people so inherently different that they must be kept out. Carlson claims that the Roman Empire was the last place that allowed such people in, and that they brought it down. He doesn't want the U.S. empire brought down in the same way.

Yet, among the points on which the United States needs criticism, is its stinginess in admitting refugees relative to many other countries. And among those who disagree with Carlson on the merits of criticizing countries are pretty much everyone who has led transformational change for the people of the United States.

Doing as much good as anyone right now is Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. We need to keep her in Congress because of the good she is doing and because of the dangers presented by the forces that want her removed. Do your part here.

Let's not condone racism. Let's reward good work rather than punish it.
