The case Trump has made for threatening to grab the power of setting himself above the rule of law in a "national emergency" is a pile of falsehoods. Immigrants do not commit crimes at a higher rate than non-immigrants. As the New York Times reported about our Southern border: “Migrant border crossings have been declining for nearly two decades.”
The number of terrorist attacks committed by people who came across the border add up to exactly zero. And the State Department said in a recent report that there is "no credible evidence" that terrorist groups have sent operatives to enter the United States through Mexico.
Fleeing disasters in Central America in part created by U.S. policy, and applying for asylum, is not a threatening or criminal action.
Nothing has changed this week, month, or year that can be identified as a national emergency!

When President Harry Truman tried to seize steel mills to prevent a labor strike, a strong impeachment movement in Congress helped stop him. In the end, the Supreme Court took up the matter and ruled against Truman. Impeachment movements often succeed without ever getting to impeachment or conviction.
We have national and global emergencies: environmental collapse, nuclear danger, poverty. For Trump to declare a "national emergency" over this concocted crisis is too outrageous for business as usual.
