Courts Can't Remove Trump. We can – via Congress.

At the top of our list of impeachable offenses -- since literally the first day of Donald Trump's presidency -- has been his unprecedented violation of the domestic and foreign emoluments clauses of the U.S. Constitution, which aim to prevent the corruption of the White House by financial incentives.

As the months have rolled by without impeachment, Trump (and his daughter and son-in-law) have flaunted their seeming impunity.

It's potentially helpful that a court has now ruled that the Attorneys General of Washington, D.C., and Maryland can sue Trump over this abuse of power.

But the courts have no ability to impeach or to remove from office. Lawsuits and courts didn’t force President Nixon to resign. Congress did — with the House Judiciary Committee approving Articles of Impeachment and constituent pressure forcing most Congresspeople to make it clear that they meant business.

While this lawsuit may force more details into the public realm, no more details are needed in order to impeach Trump and remove him from office. What's needed is political will – and that requires direct pressure on Congress from constituents.

While many groups are sending out floods of emails “for impeachment,” RootsAction is almost unique as we provide quick ways for you to contact your representative in Congress.

Please help us expand this nationwide campaign!

While a current lawsuit is limited to the foreign emoluments clause, it is the domestic emoluments clause that Congress cannot waive. We need to make clear to our Congress members right now, in person, by phone, and by email, that impeachment over both domestic and foreign emoluments cannot wait.

Then phone and visit their local office while they are in their districts this week. If they try to pass the buck to courts or otherwise delay, remind them of their oath to protect the Constitution. Remind them of what Martin Luther King Jr. said: There is such a thing as being too late.
