The situation on the ground for Palestinian children is rapidly deteriorating. We need you to take action.

Click here to write your members of Congress today, asking them to urge President Obama to appoint a Special Envoy for Palestinian Children.

At the end of February, there were 440 Palestinian children in Israeli military detention. This is the highest number since data became available from the Israel Prison Service in 2008. For the first time in nearly four years, Israel has reintroduced the use of administrative detention against children, a procedure whereby a child can be imprisoned without charge or trial, often renewable indefinitely.

To effectively monitor and respond to this crisis, Rep. Betty McCollum (D-MN) has initiated a letter to President Obama asking him to appoint a special envoy to examine the critical situation of Palestinian children living in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem. Appointing a special envoy will promote greater respect in the U.S. for the human rights of Palestinian children and increase accountability.

Children under 18 years old now represent 46.2 percent of the 4.68 million Palestinians living in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. These children live under a prolonged military occupation with no end in sight. Instead of growing up with a negotiated settlement founded on universal human rights principles, justice, and respect for human dignity, Palestinian youth have had their futures stifled by failed negotiation and implementation, systemic discrimination, and settlement expansion.

Systemic impunity for persistent grave human rights violations, combined with the hopelessness of limited future prospects for Palestinian youth are, at least in part, the triggers for recent violence. The status quo is not sustainable. Together we can force the U.S. government to act to limit any further deterioration in the current situation.

The deadline for signing the letter is May 20, so click here to write your representative and senators today.
