The RootsAction.org Team
RootsAction supporters are warmly invited to the Media Reform Coalition's Media Democracy Festival.
The day starts with a rally including talks from secure social network developer and designer Aral Balkan, Deputy leader of the Green Party Amelia Womack, National Union of Journalists' General Secretary Michelle Stanistreet, Professor of Media and Communications Natalie Fenton, and Co-founder of independent news aggregator Real Media, Kam Sandhu.
In the afternoon there is an open space unconference with sessions on Media Co-ops, Community Journalism, Creating a Citizen TV Revolution, the Future of Public Service Broadcasting, and much more. The Centre for Investigative Journalism will be delivering short workshops on Information Security, Data Stories, Interactive Storytelling, and getting the most out of Freedom of Information laws.
Also, there will be screenings of two documentaries: The Fourth Estate, a feature documentary about the media business and the history, the practices, and the people who run it; and El diario de Agustín (Augustin's Newspaper), an exposé of the CIA-financed efforts of the Edwards family of Chile to cover up the human rights abuses of the Pinochet dictatorship through its newspaper 'El Mercurio'.
In the evening there is a party with live crowdfunding, spoken word from leading word-smiths Anthony Anaxagorou, Deanna Rodger and Potent Whisper, and a fantastic live band United Vibrations.
