It might seem hard to censor climate change. After all, it's the climate. Our children will live in whatever becomes of it.
But try pointing out that President Barack Obama may have doomed the earth's climate by authorizing oil drilling in the Arctic -- this according to scientists who say that the Arctic oil must remain unused if the climate is to remain habitable. In this light, Obama's visit to the Arctic to lament what he himself is doing to the Arctic just adds insult to unprecedented injury.
Many avoid saying such things. Doing so requires the kind of independence that RootsAction.org embodies, the willingness to face misguided partisan criticism and say what needs to be said.
RootsAction intends to put everything we have into the demand for a radical redirection of priorities to protect the climate between now and the United Nations Climate Change Conference to be held in Paris between November 30 and December 11.

This year's conference, like the 2009 conference in Copenhagen, is being billed as possibly the last chance to save the climate of the earth. Both claims may be true, as "saving" the earth at this point means limiting the damage. We can no longer limit the damage to what we could have in 2009, but we may be able to nonetheless limit it significantly.
Thanks to documents provided by whistleblower Edward Snowden, we know that the NSA spied on the other nations' delegations to Copenhagen; in the view of many observers that action, as well as U.S. negotiating, helped sabotage the talks. For Paris to turn out differently, the United States will need to take a different approach.
Click here to add your name to the demand for:
- A public U.S. commitment not to spy on the other delegations or their governments.
- A public U.S. commitment to end all new drilling, mining, and exploration for fossil fuels.
- An end to all U.S. government subsidies of fossil fuels.
- A shift of $100 billion per year from the biggest U.S. polluter, the military, to investment in renewable energy.
- A public commitment to make all U.S. energy renewable by 2030.
