The U.S. Marine Corps has found a rich and beautiful island, falsely called it "desolate and uninhabitable" (despite the fact that many species live there, including homo sapiens), and proposed to make it the new Vieques.
Pagan Island is an ancient home to the Chamorro people (some of whom live there and many of whom wish to return there) and the habitat of unique animals and plants, many of them endemic, rare and endangered. Every natural and cultural resource is threatened by the planned live-fire training ground.

A transfer of our major resources from war-making to environment-saving is the clearest path to survival and prosperity. Let's take this opportunity to build a bridge between peace activism and environmental activism.
In the long run, a way to stop future missile strikes into Syria or anywhere else is to stop the testing of such weaponry on an island paradise that some people consider expendable and other people, animals, insects, birds, and fish consider home.
