It has been said that our parents didn't give us the earth, our children loaned it to us. But far from paying them back with interest, we're defaulting on the loan.
To make matters worse, we're failing to provide the quality education that we could easily afford to make free for everyone. The $1.1 trillion in current student debt is less than the $1.2 trillion the U.S. government spends on war and war preparation in a single year.
Click here to tell your representative, senators, and president that maintaining current interest rates is not enough. Education must be treated as a human right.
Whether you obtain a college degree, a few credits, or none, debt is hard to avoid. Pew found that almost half of those failing to complete college cite financial costs as a major reason. And now Congress proposes to double the interest rate on student debt.
Our government gives us lots of things: highways, fossil fuel subsidies, massive prisons, wars, missiles, tax breaks for bankers. Why not quality education instead?
