Dear Supporter,

Reducing the House and Senate to a 12-member deficit committee was a very bad idea, and it's working out very badly.

Tell your representative to cosponsor HR 3201 to eliminate the Super Committee, and to vote down any proposal from the Super Committee that does not raise taxes on the superrich and cut the military -- or that does cut our social safety net.

The results of our Build a Better Budget tool align with public opinion polls and the chants of the Occupy movement from coast to coast: "How do we fix the deficit? End the wars, tax the rich!"

The Super Committee met last Wednesday and is meeting again this afternoon.  At last week's meeting, these two most popular deficit-cutting measures were carefully avoided, except by our friend from Veterans for Peace, Leah Bolger, who pointed them out to the committee before the police arrested her: video.

After last week's meeting, the Democratic and Republican halves of the Super Committee leaked partial descriptions of their latest proposals.  The Republicans – as expected – want to lower taxes on corporations and make big cuts in non-military spending, including Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security cost of living adjustments.

Even more troubling, the Democrats agreed on Social Security and wanted to cut only a bit less from Medicare, Medicaid, and other health programs. Democrats also offered vague talk about some military cuts and some tax increases.

The middle ground between these two sketched-out proposals is catastrophic. Typically, Democrats seem ready to compromise far beyond the middle ground if not all the way to the other side.

Tell your representative to cosponsor HR 3201 to eliminate the Super Committee, and to vote down any proposal from the Super Committee that does not significantly tax the rich and cut the military, or that does cut our safety net.

Sincerely,
Sarah, Aimee, David
